Philly with Shruthi

My visits to my daughter are always fun filled and fulfilling. In the three years she has stayed here, she always finds time to take me out on weekends and some weekdays too. She continues to surprise me with these small quaint places she takes me to.
She resides in west Philly close to the University. Her house is a corner house with views to the streets on either sides. The mile long street is lined with trees. Some of the trees bear colorful flowers. Paved footpath makes it convenient to walk along the road at any time of the day. Both sides of the street has tall brick houses. The trees arch from either side of the road providing shade while walking.
It was the season of Petunia when I visited her this time. Yellow, White and Pink petunia bulbs could be see all around . Their long strong stems holding the tender petals of the colorful blooms. One could sit in silence and marvel at the wonderment of nature. Most of the houses had small garden patches in front of their houses.

Shruthi's house is warm, summery and full of contentment. It is a harmonious house which reeks of peace and serenity. The windows are large. The living room has two odd sitters, one yellow and one blue. The sitters are placed in an angle such that one could look out of the window and see the skies, the house at the other side and the branches of the tree swaying in the gentle breeze.

Saturday morning was a beautiful cloudy morning. There was a mild drizzle. The weather forecast was promising. It was quite easy to slip into reading a book and sipping cups of tea
At her insistence we stepped out to the spring weather. Deciding to Uber to the Flea Market, we reached the upper scale district of Fairmount Avenue. Crossing over the road, we came across a footpath with many small tables with curious wares. There were small stalls with vendors selling everything one would need or not.

Used goods, collectables, cheap items , antiques were being sold. Some of the items were very interesting. Our first stop was at a stall selling vintage clothing. There were so may charming hats on display. I could not help but try on one of the hats. After much debate I decided to leave the hat behind knowing very well I would not find a use for it. I found this shop which was selling sword and daggers. The edges were blunt though. There were shops selling re styled furniture. If one was looking for a unique piece to adorn the home, one would find it here. We stopped by a book seller selling some rare books on Philadelphia. We decided to buy one of them for our book collection.
At the road corner there was a solo man playing the trumpet. The music was joyful and kept with the mood of the flea market.

The trumpet man playing his peppy music.

Prints, paintings and vinyl records, vintage cookware were in plenty. There were vendors selling fresh produce and bakery products. It was interesting to see so many unwanted household stuff in the market. People were out strolling enjoying the ambience and looking for bargains. Some had come in with their huge dogs.

We ambled along the market and managed to purchase a multiple pot holder for the house. A colored mirror caught our attention. We debated much about the need for a mirror at home. Yielding we purchased the mirror. It is square in shape and had painted edges. A blue wrought iron table was offered for a steal of a price. That too ended up with us. Happy with our day of purchases we returned home and headed to the gym.

  4. This is an amazing write up and it seems that you thoroughly enjoyed the trip and writing about it. What once again strikes me is your ability to tell a story with some telling pictures that the writing sometimes seem spurious :)
